diet report

Been a good girl today. Only had a salad and coffee plus a yoghurt the whole day. My former colleague and now buddy came over to pick me up and off we went to Upper Penang Road where we related our grouses to each other over coffee.

back on the diet track

I guess I'll stop talking about food in here. It's BAD, BAD, BAD! Not that I'm good in it anyway. I think I always do a lousy job talking about food. Maybe it isn't my priority.
I've noticed of late that all my clothes feel a few sizes smaller. Sigh. Working life has got to me. Just like many other people especially women, I'm an emotional eater myself and I eat when I'm stressed, anxious, jubilant and even when I feel that I'm fat already. Bah! Sometimes I eat not bacause I'm hungry but I eat because I feel bored and the food seems to fill the void in me. So I guess I have to be back on my diet track which means no rice, no white bread, no pasta, no junk food and no fruits. NO MUNCHING. It's even harder to tell Mom I'm back on my diet as she's really against dieting and the last time my weight came off, she freaked out and told me how ugly I looked as I looked like I didn't belong to the family any more. Get what I mean? So this time around I'll have to make it less obvious to her on anyone of them for the matter. I'll take all the food she buys and feed them to the stray dogs and cats instead. Without her knowing, of course. Mom has a knack of stocking on all my favourite food whenever she knows I'm on a diet and that always seemed to ruin my diet.

My diet menu:

Breakfast:
1 litre of ice cold water
Coffee with skimmed milk and no sugar
1 wholemeal cracker with tuna

Lunch:
1 litre of ice cold water
Salad with 1 tsp. olive oil and balsamic vinegar
or grilled chicken breast with salad

Snack:
1 litre of ice cold water
plain low-fat yoghurt with 1 tsp. honey

Dinner:
1 litre of ice cold water
1 small bowl of clear vegetable/tomato soup

*work out= brisk-walking for an hour every day or until I'm drenched in sweat
The treadmill is once again my bestfriend for one hour every day!

This is a low calorie diet which is high in lean protein and low in fat and carbohydrates. I went on this diet last year and lost 10 kg in a month! If I really have to eat out, then I'll opt for a more diet-friendly fare like wet popiah, chapati, salad (NOT the ones soaked in dressing! eeeewww), grilled lean meat and (use a paper napkin to blot away all the oil) or clear soups. Here we go again, Lina! You can do it!

Ossequi Squisiti a Restorante Piccollo Italia ( Delicious Treats at Restorante Little Italy)

Finished work around 5 today and headed straight home as I was exhausted beyond words. A five-hour class every day really works me to the bones! Got home, chatted with Mom a little before catching a few winks. Woke up and was still bleary-eyed when Mom suggested going over to Vialli's for dinner. Of course, when she said Vialli's, she really meant Little Italy. Vialli is the Italian owner/chef of the restorante and a long-time family friend. No prize for guessing what kind of cuisine this place serves but what makes this place remarkable is the rustic italian charm this place boasts of and of course all the gorgeous dishes.
Mom's favourite place to satisfy her italian cravings (LOL) is actually just a few steps away from our place so it's not a wonder if sometimes I could be found there in my jammies! Normally she'll say "WE go downstairs makan at Vialli's lah..." whenever she's having one of her unproductive days in the kitchen. hehe...
Neway, if you crave for authentic italian dishes, then Little Italy is the place to go. What's not to be liked about a place that can satisfy one's every whims and fancy including to cook one's pasta al dente. Well, many eateries and restorantes claim they serve authentic italian dishes but at the mention of the word al dente, they get cold feet! bahhhh.....
My favourite dish at this place has to be the piedino dell'agnello which is actually stewed leg of lamb! mmmhhhhhhh!!! My other all time favourite is the spaghetti/tagliatelle vongole which is pasta with small cockles cooked in white sauce. The pizzas here are waaaaay nicer and healthier than the preservative laden ones we get at fast-food chains. The pizza dough is made daily hence its freshness. As for pizzas, my favourite is Napoli which is pizza topped with anchovies, basil and loads and loads of cheese, olives and tomatoes. When it comes to the all-italian dessert, nothing beats the tiramisu from Little Italy as the sinful yet tempting blend of coffee and mascarpone cheese just melts and lingers in my mouth after every bite.. bliss! But didn't get to enjoy my tiramisu today as it was sold out! See what I said? And oh yeah, the coffee here beats the ones at Coffee Bin and Tar Sucks anytime!
You can't claim to have tasted Italian food here until you go to Little Italy! Well, I haven't had the fortune to step into the land of Roberto (LOL) , but I guess I'll have to settle for the land of Vialli as for now a.k.a Little Italy! Viva La Italia!

Insalata del giardino del formaggio di feta (really yummy salad)

Sunday @ home

Been an unproductive Sunday for moi today.. I'm too drained of my energy to go out anywhere... Been munching on sunflower seeds and grapes for breakfast, lunch and it's slightly past dinnertime now and I am contemplating on what to have. Have just downed two big mugs of coffee and a few pieces of Jacob's cream crackers, spread generously with my favourite raspberry jam from Marks and Spencer. Too bad the batteries are being charged now or else I could take a few piccies and post them here. Ah well, maybe tomorrow.. They are really simple and yummy and make a decent meal for someone as lazy as me... LOL

why oh why?

I didn't think I'd have the energy to blog today after a long day at work. But as I sat slumped in front of the TV trying to amuse myself, the image of something I had caught sight of this afternoon kept flashing by before me. It left an unsettling and disturbing feeling even to be ignored and pushed to the back of my mind just like that. Maybe it is just me to allow something like this to rob me of my sleep.
I was making my way to the ATM during lunch break when a greyish looking lump caught my sight as it was just inches away from the machine. At first, I thought it was just some piece of unwanted clothing heaped on the floor like that. I nearly jumped out of my skin when i noticed that it began to stir. It took me a few seconds to register that the 'lump' was actually a dog. I was momentarily frozen, unsure if my mind did fully register the image it had just captured. For, I have never in my life until that moment, witnessed something so heartwrenching and pitiful that I had to force myself to contain the tears.
The creature I was looking at hardly had any fur left on its skin which was covered intead with a thick layer of fungus, scab and what looked like some other parasitic growth, making it look somewhat deformed. Its eyes were bloodshot red and one ear was almost severed, dangling loosely on the outermost layer of skin there. Even from a distance I could see maggots crawling in the wounds. At that instant, my mind went blank and all thoughts vanished from my mind, including my actual purpose of going there. I went numb and I had to practically drag myself back to college. My only regret was to not be able to get it any food and water. For I couldn't think then.
Maybe I will go 'visit' Scabby tomorrow. I'll bring food and water. I just hope I'll be strong. Why, oh why can't I just be like most people, devoid of all these feelings and just turn a blind eye towards animals and not even realise it? I guess that's why they can sleep soundly and I can't. I think way too much, I think.

Ingolf Kneipe German Restaurant and Bar

Went for dinner at this place the other day with my family. Something for a change. A cozy and casual place for convos over typical German dishes like sausages with sauerkraut and of course, german beer. Nothing special if you ask me but for the no-ideas, this place is cool. The thing I like about this place is tha bar. Looks cool. The service is lousy if you want my frank opinion. I asked for serviettes only to get a dismissive wave from one of the waiters. Blah....

the bar...

My uncle had the mixed grill...

I had the chicken sausage/bangers with sauerkraut.. Sauerkrat is pickled cabbage with onions.. good appetizer...

onions rings...

Where is the love?

I just came home from my daily round of feeding the kittens and their mother at the garden of my apartment. Depending on what we have at disposal, Mom would sometimes pack some cat food, sometimes just plain rice with steamed fish to be fed to the furry felines. After discreetly placing the fishy mush-filled plastic bag in a shadowy corner of the apartment block, I made my way for the shopping complex next door to get something to drink.
There i was, my favourite pearl-milk tea in one happily sipping away. I slowed down when I saw a lady with greying hair fumbling in a huge bag near the kitties, fishing out a plastic bag. I looked at the kittens chomping down their dinner furiously and she told me in Hokkien what a pitiful sight it was. I agreed with her and she handed me the plastic bag and poured some Friskies into it. I asked her if she was staying at the apartment and on which floor and I was really surprised when she told me she was staying at Jelutong. To think she travelled all the way here just to feed some animals. She then told me some story about 'karma' (fate) andI listened intently, couldn't help but agreed with her about animals being helpless and somewhat invalid creatures and they couldn't possibly relate their hunger pangs to us nor had they any money to buy some unlike us.
I can't say I am a staunch or religious person because I really haven't found the calling to commit myself in a religious way. Don't know why but I guess it must be because of what's been happening or rather not happening around me that leaves me feeling this way. But here's what I think. What's the use of accumulating merits in a religion, praying one's heart out day in day out but when it comes to helping the poor, disabled and helpless creatures, one just can't be bothered? It is the deeds carried out with a sincere heart that makes this world a better place to live in.
My late grandma used to say: "When we help people in distress (human beings), i.e. by putting a plate of food on their table when they have none, they put us on a pedestal and their mouth only have words of praise for us but when the food is already in their throat and about to be swallowed, they forget our deeds and turn their backs to us and the words of praise turn into things ungrateful. If you feed an animal, it doesn't praise you nor does it say bad things about you because it can't. The only thing they can do is to remember who fed them."
How very true, *Mummy!

*Mummy was the affectionate term I used to address my late maternal grandma.

Afdlin is right. GUBRA is THE movie to watch!

I finally got the chance to catch Gubra after lunch today and I have to agree with Adlin. Totally. it IS a must-see! I can strike all chords there are with this movie. For this movie really reflects a genuine Malaysia which depicts the reality and true happenings in all walks of life in this country. It really breathes every breath of Malaysia in every scene from every aspect with regard to our diversity of language, culture, belief and tradition. I think words alone will not do much justice to this movie. One has to watch it to know what I mean.
On another note, how many times have we come across non-Malays who actually pay to watch a malay movie? Well, I have never bothered to ask that question before since I had this impression that the only Malay movies non-Malays watch and appreciate are the P.Ramlee ones and not more than that. Can't blame them though. Even I think twice before choosing to watch another strereotypical malay flick.
But, while in the theatre, I thought I heard people talking softly in hokkien. Not giving much thought to it and dismissing it by telling myself that they might be of the same breed as me (as in of mixed parentage) I didn't give it much thought and sat back and continued listening to Orked screaming. LOL. But when the movie ended and I did a quick look-around of the theatre, I was very amazed to find the people sitting behind me were indeed Chinese. A bunch of them and they were still discussing the movie. LOL. And, there were two mat-sallehs with them too! Finally the stereotype is slowly being broken. Kudos to Yasmin Ahmad!

The games people play!

The clock on my mobile says 8.30 p.m. I should have left the college four hours ago after work but I had a meeting to attend until 5.30. I am now still in the staffroom and this is the first time I'm still around at this hour. This place seems so empty. It IS empty! sigh. The steady shower of rain has turned into a light drizzle and this seems to illustrate my state of being at the moment. Light drizzle is always associated to a funeral. I might as well be at one right now or for that matter, be at my own. For that's how I'm feeling right now. Solemn and melancholic.Sigh.
Maybe it's me. Maybe it's the game people play. Maybe I'm not good in life's little game of survival. I thought I was in for something great. I should have known better that 'good' things are always just too good to be true. There is no such thing anymore as "good things come in small packages". Maybe in the stone-age era they did.

weekend happenings

woh... been a busy weekend for moi! Was out the whole day from morn till night on Saturday and Sunday. Woke up pretty early on Saturday as I had an extra class with my students at college. Only two turned up. bah!. Called Manika and gang and they told me they were sleeping! Had a short meeting with my boss and ended the class at 12:30. After class, my students and I marched up to the Mongolian girls' apartment and banged on their door as we were supposed to go to the museum together. Waited for them to shower and get ready and it was nearly 2 p.m. when we left for town. As they said they were hungry and wanted to eat at somewhere comfy and cheap with good food, the first thing that came to mind was the food court at Gurney. Well, the food there isn't exactly what we'll call cheap under normal circumstances but I guess for them, it's ok. They are crazy about the claypot chicken rice at the Makan-makan foodcourt at Gurney Plaza.
By the time the finished eating, it was already 4 p.m. and I didn't think we could make it to the museum as I knew for sure it was closed by then. So, we did a bit of window shopping and people-watching before we called it a day. In the meantime, I had forgotten to bring my mobile with me and when I got back home, I had like 33 missed calls and 93 messages! (NO KIDDING!)
telling me the whole world was looking for me! LOL and after logging on to MSN I was told the same thing by my USM coursemate, Dolly. She told me that my two other buddies, Kok Hin and Chek Lee were in town (they are both from Ipoh and JB respectively) and had called me for like more than a zillionth times but I did not pick up. OOOhhh, sorry! :P
Anyways, I called Kok Hin at afterwards and by that time, it was almost 10 p.m. and got a brief lecture from him about it being so difficult to contact me. hehehe... Ok, I promise! No more leaving my mobile at home!!!! :P
So then, Kok and and the rest of my buddies came to my place and off we scooted to E-gate to do some catching-ups over at some Hong-Kong version of Tarsucks! Didn't even bother to look at the name of that place as it's really not worth going. we only sat down there as Tarsucks was packed with too many wannabes already. Furthermore, that place was practically deserted we reckoned it was a suitable place to chat and catch up on things without any distraction.
Sunday today was spent with the gang at Prangin Mall shopping for nothing and staisfying all their cravings for the food unavailable at their place. Took them to this Taiwanese restaurant called 600cc, Swatow Lane and also Padang. hehehe.. had the usual stuff Penang is notoriously famous for like ice-kachang, Char Koay Teow, Loh-bak, pasembur etc, etc.. lol
After several rounds of Leng Lui Thorng Sui over dinner of the usual hawker fare, we headed t0 20 Leith Street to unwind over some more drinks and pool! hehehe... I really fancy this place as it's got a certain charm about it with its intricate pre-war architecture and also the paraphernalia of yesteryears. The one that caught my attention most was an old grammarphone followed by an antique typewriter. Old pictures and posters of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley are hung casually on the walls. This place is a must-see if you love oldies and antiques.Plus, this place also has its very own mascot, Freddie the dog which actually belongs to Peter Lim, the owner of this place. I used to frequent this place last year before I started working. hehehe...
Been a busy but fun-filled weekend for me. The only thing or rather person missing was my best buddy, Dolly. With her around, it would have been a better blast! hehehe... Wish you were here, mate!

endorphins overdose..

Been a very good day for me... Woke up at 2 p.m. and lazed the whole afternoon away in front of the pc and the TV. No lunch. LOL. Too lazy to go downstairs to buy. Then I got a call from college telling me to go see the big boss who came down from KL. So i had an express shower and put my face on (lol) and quickly ironed my shirt and whizzed out of the house in no time. When I got there, I was just on time. What was the meeting all about? Can't divulge just yet until I'm certain of the outcome. *Fingers crossed*. hehehe...
Then after the meeting, I went downstairs to the library for a chit-chat session with Ms. Choo and Mr. Roger, two of my chit-chat buddies at college. hehehe.. After that, I headed to town to meet my long-'lost' high school bestfriend, Patricia a.k.a Khoe Hwei. She came with her sister and off we went to meet another of our friend, Phak Kuan a.k.a Popcorn. LOL. Did some catching up over Nandos at the Airport. Of all places! LOL! Well, Popcorn had to fetch his Dad from the airport anyway. Nothing has changed. Pat is still the same as ever. hehehe.. And we talked the same nonsense and crap and talked our language still. LOL. The good old days... The good, carefree days...
Been a good day today... Hope I will have more days like this to come...

Apams and meehun sup for brekkie @ Gelugor

My favourite meehun 'gerai' @ Gelugor. Nothing beats a bowl of piping hot meehun sup to start the day. This 'gerai' is actually near the Maybank i.e. the Gelugor branch. They start selling at 8 a.m and finish at around 11.00 a.m. or so.

My favourite place for 'apam'. There is no direct equivalence for 'apam' in English but i guess pancakes ought to be the nearest one. LOL. I think these are way nicer than pancakes though.

meehun sup....

lovely hot apams.. hehehe...

Normally I have a heavy breakfast of these stuff and a cup of Nescafe to boot. I seldom take lunch and after brekkie, I only snack the day away till dinner. Usually, I don't take heavy meals other than breakfast. My snacks are normally either beancurd (tau fu fah), choccies, fruit, yoghurt and sometimes when I'm up for it, light hawker fares like popiah, 'cher hoo', chapati or tosai...

dinner @ Telok Tempoyak

It was one of those days again when we just simply couldn't decide on what to have for dinner after work. Azizul and I went to fetch Mom from home and off we went to Tasha Dal at Bayan Lepas as Mom said she wanted to have Nasi Dalcha first thing when she got into the car. Finally! Someone with an idea! LOL
Again, as luck would have it, the place was closed! Geez, am I jinxed or what? Sigh. Since we were already in that area, the nearest edible option would have to be Telok Tempoyak and since Mom fancies seafood, it was just as well. :)

The place...

cute, eh? If you are bored of having dinner at the table, then you can always opt to cram into these cute li'l huts They are kind of romantic, too.. hehehe

lovely appetizing scenery before dinner... This boat was practically next to where I was seated! LOL.. This restaurant is actually like a marina.. It IS a Marina!

seafood splendour.. before the massacre.. LOL

udang masak pedas Thai.. the gravy is yum yum but I hate prawns!!!

sotong goreng tepung... my firm favourite it's really crunchy on the outside and chemy on the outside.. plus, the chilli sauce is yummy!!!

kepah masak black pepper and lemon.. this is a new twist to the normal way of cooking kepah.

ikan tiga rasa (3 flavoured fish) this has got a sourish, spicy and sweet taste to it. excellent combination!

ikan bakar air asam. This is mom's favourite as the 'air asam' or tamarind (tangerine?) sauce really compliments the baked fish and the banana leaf brings out the flavour of the fish..

balitong.. dunno what this is called in English but 'sucky sucky' sounds cute.. LOL

We paid like RM90 (plus 2 big pitchers of watermelon juice and 2 vegetable dish) for everything.. if that isn't cheap, I don't know what it.. hehehe..

lunch @ college

Jackfruit-raisin and chicken ham pizza
This yummy pizza was made and given to me by Uncle Ben and Auntie Janet, the very kind and thoughtful canteen opetarors at our college. It was really yummy as it was a creative masterpiece unlike other pizzas as there were strips of jackfruit instead of the ordinary pineapple and instead of olives, dark raisins were used. At first, I thought the combination was odd but one bite and I was in loveeee!!! LOL. Well, for those of you not working/studying at this college, don't fret as Uncle Ben's pizza is also available at Gurney Drive i.e. @ Bali-Bali restaurant opposite the beach. Try it.. it's good, I promise!

l
Kueh and cakes/pastry for tea
See those yummy looking stuff? My all-time favourite has got to be the 'cream-cracker cake' which is on the top right. It's really YUMMY i tell you... hehehe... I look forward to tea-time at college.. LOL (How to stay slim la?)

My student, Manika with her new 'hair-extension' do.. Those white stripes are glued onto the hair and can last for 3-4 months...

Monday Blues... busted!

Went to work half-heartedly today wishing i could burry myself under the comforter and continue my slumber. sigh.. the only thing that got me up was the thought of the yummy apams and meehun sup at Gelugor which i just love! LOL.. Especially those apams. They are plain, eggless indian pancakes made from rice flour, i think. They are eaten with this sugared coconut chutney which really brings out the taste of the apams. hehehe.. couple that with a piping hot cup of Nescafe tarik.. mmmmm... really perks my mornings up!
Had an OK day at work today except for the temporary malfunction of the mind. Taught my students on 'Subject-Verb agreement' and question tags. They are catching on pretty well. :) At teatime today, my students and I crossed over the road to the Batu Lanchang Market to get some kueh and I got my favourite 'pulut tai tai' which is this blue-coloured pieces of glutinuous rice eaten with 'kaya' or as my dad likes to call it, Malaysian jam. LOL! The Mongolian girls really enjoyed the kuehs. hehehe...
After class, one of the Mongolian girls, Manika, who also happens to be my favourite (hehehe) and I headed to Gurney Plaza to have our hair done. She got this hair-extension thing done and I got bangs! LOL. She chose strips of white coloured hair to be joined to her jet-black, waist-length hair. They created a very stark contast against her original hair colour but still the end-result looked very nice. After some coaxing from Manika, i got mine done like hers.. Can you believe it? I chose copper though and I had only two strips on both sides of my head fixed while she got ten fixed onto her hair! hehehe...
After that we went for dinner at the food court. I ordered a hot plate noodle while she settled for claypot chicken rice and we both had desserts afterwards of 'honeydew' sago and 'Soursop Snowy'. We later went to catch a movie, Ice Age II. Not something I'd normally watch, but I'm glad Manika suggested that movie.. I could use a good laugh to ward off the Monday Blues.. I guess... hehehehe...
All in all, it wasn't such a bad day afterall... (cost me RM100 though!!! uwwaaaaaa!!!!) :D

*Note to self : bring cam and take piccies of apams and meehun sup. hehehe...

Monday blues... is it a cliche?

sigh... I'm at work now feeling rotten. Not up for anything. DOn't know why, but i might as well have swallowe rotten eggs as that's how i feel like right now. Why? No reason. sigh.... I'm just so demotivated to do anything. Good thing i have my students who are always so bubbly. They always put a smile on my face. I'll miss them... :(

see? what did i say? LOL

isnt't it lovely? hehehe..

entrance overlooking the School Hall

finally, my favourite spot... hehehe...

Here are some photos of my former high school. Went there today to snap some shots. Was a great day for outdoor photography as the sky was a clear, torquoise blue with cotton candy clouds to boot. Hehehe... So, here goes...

Sunday @ everywhere

This is the yummy dessert i was raving about which I got at Batu Lanchang food court. It's actually 'thong yuen' in coconut milk served with shaved ice and red beans.

My grampa's grave...

This is the grave of a certain Mr. Andrew Duncan who passed away in 1931. His loyal dog just refused to leave his grave and it died there. Hence the monument. It's the most touching thing..

This is a lovely picture of the stupa at Wat Chaiyamangalaram or The Sleeping Buddha Temple.

The Sleeping Buddha

My Great Grandpa and Great Grandma

Had loads of fun today cruising around town. Went for lunch with my family at Cititel Hotel. Food there was so-so but i did enjoy the lamb-chops! yumm! After that, we headed to the temple of The Sleeping Buddha to pay respects to my great-grandpa and great-grandma who were cremated there. Although my whole family embraced Islam when Mom and Dad got married, that does not mean we should forget our roots and tradition entirely.
The Sleeping Buddha or Wat Chaiyamangalaram is a nice place to be with its quaint and very peaceful ambience but the joss-sticks were a tad too much for me to bear! The smoke which encapsulated the enclosed underpass where the urns are placed really made me tear!
Then we headed to my granpa's grave at Western Road. I've always liked this place as it's got a certain charm and tranquility about it. The canopy of frangipani trees at the cemetery gives it a hint of romance and mystery. Said our hellos to my gramps and then off we went to my former high school. Snapped around a bit (as promised).
Then, my Mom said she wanted to get some fish from the Batu Lanchang market. I didn't follow her inside. Instead, I went on my own to the food court and bought myself a nice and cooling dessert. hehehe.. It was just thong yuen but what was special about it was that it was not served in syrup. Instead, it was served with shaved ice and coconut milk and tinned kidney beans. yum! Bliss on such a scorching day! hehehe...

nowhere to go

yummy treat... delicious 'thorng sui'@ Leng Lui Thorng Sui, Jelutong Market

meeeeeee at Church Street Pier at almost midnight! LOL

sigh... it's another dull Saturday night in Penang. Went to Sri Ananda Bhawan with Azizul and my Mongolian students for dinner. They seem to like the ghee thosai there.. actually, so do i ;)... hehehe.. After sending them home, Azizul and I headed for Gurney and played a few rounds of Initial-D as the movie that I wanted to watch, Gubra wasn't showing yet.
Felt like having something sweet to satisfy those itchy buds, so we went downstairs to Gurney Walk. Bah. As expected, it was teaming with cigarette-smoking people and loud dudes and dudettes. Without a word, we headed straight to the car and drove off. Zoomed around Esplanade, Beach Street and Church Street a bit and took some nonsense pictures. LOL. We were bored!! But hey, it can be fun to do nonsensical (but legal, of course) things sometimes.
We stopped by my favourite place for 'thorng sui' (chinese soupy dessert) at the Jelutong Market. hmmm... beats designer coffees anytime! hehehe...
